Celebrate Friederich Schiller, the Poet of Freedom born in Marbach, Germany, on Nov. 10, 1759, with a dialogue with special guest William F. Wertz, Jr. Will is the Editor and primary translator, along with Marianna Wertz, of four volumes of translations of Schiller's dramas, poetry and philosophical essays and letters. He is President of the Schiller Institute in the U.S., and Editor-in-chief of Fidelio magazine, the quarterly magazine of the Schiller Institute.
At its first international conference, in 1984, the Schiller Institute released a film biography of the poet and teacher, whose poem, the Ode to Joy, was set to music in Beethoven's great ninth symphony.
The narration of the biography begins: What would Schiller say were he to see us today? The great causes of mankind seem all but overwhelming, world peace and freedom hang in the balance, the less favored part of the world is threatened with extinction for lack of development ... our entire civilization appears to be in danger.
Would Schiller, say, as he did of the French Revolution, a great moment has found a little people?
